The Executive Council of the Association for the Advancement of Philosophy and Psychiatry (AAPP) is looking for a new Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for its official journal, Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology (PPP).
If you are interested in this position, please submit an application package to the search committee chair, Robyn Bluhm, at rbluhm@msu.edu. Your application should include (1) a letter outlining your editorial experience and your vision for the journal, and should be guided by the description of the position, below; (2) your CV. As part of the search process, we may also conduct online interviews with applicants.
Please contact Dr. Bluhm or Dr. John Sadler, the current EIC with any questions (John.Sadler@UTSouthwestern.edu). The search committee will begin reviewing applications on December 1, 2023, but if you will need more time to submit your application, please let us know.
PPP was founded in 1993 by a consortium of philosophers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other scholars for the purpose of exploring areas of overlap between academic philosophy and the practice, education, and sciences related to mental health care. As a quarterly journal published by the Johns Hopkins University Press, the journal has accomplished this vision through a variety of mechanisms. One of the important ones is the affiliations with philosophy/psychiatry organizations around the world, represented by the International Network of Philosophy and Psychiatry. Though an English-language journal, it publishes work from authors from every continent in the world other than Antarctica. Its editorial board is prominently international, and features not just clinical and philosophical academic scholars but also mental health service users and independent scholars. The diversity of participation and balance between clinical and philosophical perspectives have been the foremost priorities from the beginning, implemented not just through authorship and editorial-board representation, but also through the everyday task of running the journal, such as selecting peer-reviewers. As a general objective, we hope that a new Editor-in-Chief would embrace the ethos of PPP while responding to a changing world of scholarly publication, and the changing fields in philosophy and mental health.
The journal is owned by the Johns Hopkins University Press and is the official journal of AAPP, a member organization of the International Network of Philosophy and Psychiatry (INPP). Individual subscriptions to the journal are coupled with membership in AAPP, but the majority of the journal income comes from institutional subscriptions in various forms. The journal income does not support the Editor-in-Chief (EIC), making it a voluntary appointment, but currently supports a Managing Editor who assists the EIC and reduces the time demands of the EIC. A portion of the journal income from AAPP memberships supports the AAPP organization.
The tasks of the EIC can be summarized through these bullet points:
* Administering the peer-review process and making all final decisions regarding publication.
* Appointing and advising a panel of Senior Editors, who are assigned manuscripts to usher through the peer review process from submission to final EIC decision.
* The EIC manages the Senior Editor panel to assure balance of workload, matching submissions as much as possible with particular areas of expertise for Senior Editors, and reviewing and advising on changing circumstances and editorial problems that may arise.
* Assisted by the Managing Editor, the EIC oversees the smooth functioning of the online submission system, ScholarOne/Manuscript Central.
* The EIC makes decisions about guest editor arrangements for particular thematic issues, and assists guest editors for special issues in the development and execution of the submissions, review process, and publication.
* The EIC reviews the copyediting of all manuscripts along with the Managing Editor, as well as makes final corrections to page proofs in the production phase of each issue of the journal.
* The EIC makes final decisions on disputes related to PPP editorial decisions, occasionally assisted by Johns Hopkins University Press administrators.
* The front matter of the journal is managed by the EIC assisted by the Managing Editor, including creating the theme, if any, for the issue, and revising and updating the Instructions for Authors.
* The EIC assists in creating materials for applications to online scholarly cataloguing and maintenance of these services.
* The EIC appoints all editorial board members, with input from the Senior Editors and other members of the INPP as needed. The EIC reviews membership and calls for editorial board meetings.
* The EIC is the principal liaison between the AAPP, INPP, and the Johns Hopkins University Press, concerning their business relationships, including website design, other social media activities, and advertising and publicity.
